Job Interview Preparation

Hello, I am Jaed Hossen, an experienced HR and Compliance professional with over 12 years in the field. Throughout my career, I have conducted more than 3,000 interviews, both individually and as part of a board. Preparing for a job interview is a crucial and time-intensive process. Every single task demands careful preparation. To secure your dream job, thorough and effective preparation is essential. Drawing from my extensive experience, I would like to share some valuable insights to help you prepare for your next interview.

Preparation Before the Interview Day

There are several important steps to take in the lead-up to your interview. First, carefully review the email or message confirming the interview details, including the date, time, location, and any additional instructions. If the location is unfamiliar, use online maps, reach out to friends, family, or the hiring organization for guidance to ensure you can arrive there without complications. Plan your mode of transportation and allow extra time to avoid rushing or encountering delays. It’s always advisable to give yourself some buffer time to handle unexpected events.

Thoroughly review the interview instructions, including any dress code requirements or documents you need to bring. Additionally, study and online research about the hiring organization. Interviewers may ask, “What do you know about our company?” This question gauges your research skills and knowledge of the company. Make sure you’re familiar with the organization’s background, culture, and recent developments.

Review the job advertisement carefully to understand the key responsibilities of the role. When answering interview questions, try to connect your responses to these responsibilities. If you have relevant study materials or notes, review them beforehand. If they are extensive, focus on the key points to refresh your memory in a short amount of time.

It’s also important to review your CV or resume to ensure you’re familiar with the information you’ve shared. Interviewers often refer to your CV, so being prepared to discuss your background in detail is essential. Confirm with the hiring organization whether there will be a written exam, as some companies assess analytical skills through written tests. Always carry a pen and keep all required documents, clothing, and accessories organized in one place before the day.

On the day of the interview, make sure to eat a balanced normal meal, get a good night’s sleep, and wake up early to ensure your mental freshness.

What Interviewers Observe

Interviewers pay close attention to your appearance, body language, and overall presentation. While it’s not necessary to wear new or expensive clothing, your attire should be clean, well-fitted, and appropriate for a formal interview. Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight or uncomfortable, as this could impact your confidence and performance. A well-fitted, professional outfit in a sober color will leave a positive impression.

Keep makeup and jewelry minimal, aiming for a natural look. Wearing a watch is a good idea, and make sure your phone is on silent mode to avoid distractions during the interview. If you wear a belt, ensure its color matches your shoes. Avoid putting phones or large wallets in your trouser pockets, as this can detract from your appearance—keep them in your bag or blazer instead.

Body language plays a crucial role in interviews. Maintain good posture, make eye contact, and offer a genuine gentle smile. A confident and natural demeanor is important—avoid attempting behaviors that don’t feel authentic to you. To feel more at ease, consider practicing your body language in front of a mirror before the interview. Additionally, it’s a good idea to trim your hair and beard 5 to 7 days prior to the interview, as this ensures you look your best.

Keep in mind that many interviewers form an impression of candidates within the first few seconds. Therefore, your initial appearance and demeanor can significantly impact the interviewer’s overall perception.

Beginning the Interview

The first few minutes of the interview are crucial. Be alert and greet the interviewer(s) politely, responding to their greeting with the same level of professionalism. When speaking, make sure to maintain eye contact, particularly by looking at the interviewer’s forehead to avoid seeming distracted or unconfident. Listen carefully to each question, and respond concisely and to the point, without adding unnecessary information. If you are asked for specific details, such as your address, provide the information in a brief and clear manner. Provide a thorough answer that fully addresses the question, leaving no need for further clarification.

In the next posts on our website, we’ll cover some common interview questions and discuss how to answer them effectively. These examples will give your insight into the best approach for answering questions efficiently and confidently.

If you don’t know the answer to a question, it’s important to acknowledge it politely and professionally. Never attempt to give a false answer, as this can severely damage your credibility. Instead, say, “I’m not familiar with that, but I am eager to learn” or “That’s outside my expertise, but I would be happy to research it further.” Honesty is key, and interviewers will appreciate your transparency. No one expects you to know everything.

Ending the Interview

At the end of the interview, you will likely be asked, “Do you have any questions for us?” This is your opportunity to demonstrate your interest in the company and the role. You can inquire about the organization’s goals, growth opportunities, or the team culture. Avoid asking about salary, benefits, or personal performance in the interview at this stage, or any confidential matters.

Close the interview by thanking the interviewers for their time and expressing appreciation for being considered for the position. Reaffirm your enthusiasm for the role and your interest in contributing to the company’s success. Whether or not you get the job, always aim to leave a positive impression. Building relationships during interviews can open doors for future opportunities, so be professional and courteous in every interaction.
